venice architecture biennale

two years ago i had the chance to travel to Italy and visit the Venice Biennale (the best of art, architecture and design).  I was studying in London and mid-deep in thesis and a trip to Italy, although would be educational, just wasn't going to happen it my mind.  I should have taken the trip because now i a half way around the world and would give anything to go!

architecture, thanks to my boyfriend, is becoming one of my new favorite things - the following photos were all taken from the Venice Architecture Biennale {via} - and if you thought that the world's largest architecture show would be only about buildings - you are going to be surprised.

art lesson: tadashi kawamata

a Japanese sculptor and installer, kawamata is known for creating urban spaces that utilize simple materials.  his latest spaces or huts can be found in Paris - at the Centre Pompidou.

{via}

“The artist modifies the space on which it operates, creating outgrowths as pods nestled in height, suspended walkways, observation posts, which disturb the established order and challenge our view of our environment.”

i love the contrast between the wooden huts and the metal structure of the museum.  installation art is my favorite - anything that makes the viewer feel not in control of his/her own space is wonderful.

many many thanks matthew barney

Matthew Barney has done it again - and once again i have no idea what is going on (AshHam maybe you can take a guess).  His new exhibition 'Prayer Sheet with the Wound and the Nail' is being shown at the Schaulager Museum in Muenchenstein, near Basel, Switzerland.

Barney is one of the most versatile artists of his generation, known for his ambitious film and performance cycles - I have heard him speak, watched his films and seen his work - but his way of thinking is completely beyond mine and I think that's why his body of work is so interesting.  What do you think??

Goodbye Louise

One of Contemporary Arts best died yesterday - French born, American artist, Louise Bourgeois passed in New York City at the age of 98. She worked in a variety of materials and tackled themes relating to male and female bodies - creating emotions of anger and betrayal.  Louise was still creating works up until her death.

International Klein Blue

Yves Klein With the Void, Full Powers opens today at the Hirshhorn. Klein’s work ranges from painting to sculpture to conceptual thoughts – and that’s why I love his work so much. He started transitioning into what we now call Contemporary Art while Modern Art was still at its peak. He created his own color (IKB or International Klein Blue), signed the sky and dipped models in paint, using their bodies as the stamp for his canvas.

I have never seen a retrospective of Klein’s work before – it’s going to be a lot of blue – and hopefully an interesting exhibit.
With the Void, Full Powers runs through September 12, 2010.
